Fitzgerald Jewellers celebrates 25 years with new handmade jewellery collection

CMJ retailer member Fitzgerald Jewellers in Canterbury is marking its 25th anniversary with the launch of XXV, a new jewellery collection handmade in its on-site workshop and inspired by the city’s Roman past.

Launching on Friday 2 October, XXV brings together a collection of individually crafted pieces designed and handmade by the goldsmiths at Fitzgerald Jewellers.

The collection takes inspiration from Roman Canterbury and the jewellery, symbolism and decorative traditions of the Roman world. Serpents, intaglios, coins and richly coloured gemstones feature throughout, with each piece offering a contemporary interpretation of an ancient influence.

Rather than reproducing historical artefacts, the Fitzgerald team has used the past as a starting point to create jewellery intended to be worn and treasured today.

Created using recycled precious metals, every piece has been made by hand in the jeweller’s Canterbury workshop using traditional goldsmithing techniques. The collection brings together the skills of Fitzgerald’s workshop team including their Master Goldsmith Luke Blackie, Apprentice Goldsmith Olivia Gardiner and Goldsmith Evelyn Mulholland.

Fitzgerald Jewellers opened in Canterbury in 2001 under Managing Director Trevor Fitzgerald. Now, 25 years later, the independent business remains in the city, with traditional craftsmanship, bespoke jewellery and its visible on-site workshop at the heart of the store.

Fitzgerald Jewellers’ manager Olivia Stewart-Stead said: “XXV is a celebration of both where we are and what we do. Canterbury has an extraordinary history beneath its streets and that gave us such a rich starting point, but we never wanted simply to reproduce Roman jewellery. We wanted our goldsmiths to interpret that history in their own way and create pieces that feel relevant now.

“Most importantly, in every piece we hope you can see the hands of its maker. These are pieces made to be worn today, but we hope they will be treasured for long enough that perhaps, one day, somebody will discover a little of our history through them.”

XXV will be unveiled at Fitzgerald Jewellers during a two day in-store launch on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October 2026.

The launch will also mark the release of the Christmas issue of By Fitzgerald, the jeweller’s independently produced magazine, with its latest edition turning its attention to the future of the jewellery industry.

Fitzgerald Jewellers won two awards at the recent inaugural CMJ Awards ceremony – Craftsmanship & Heritage and Retail Design & Environment.
